Since 1970s, the two governments started exchanging students. Recent years have seen a steady growth in exchanged students between China and Iceland, with currently more than 30 Chinese students in Iceland. The education cooperation has improved accordingly.

In May 2008, Northern Light Confucius Institute of University of Iceland was established. In September 2008, Beijing Foreign Studies University began to provide Icelandic courses. In 2008 University of Iceland and Beijing Foreign Studies University signed agreement of cooperation. By far many Icelandic universities have exchanges and cooperation with Chinese universities.

Following the devastating Earthquake in Sichuan in 2008, Icelandic Business Forum members made a group donation for building a Binghua Hope Primary School in Huidong County, Liangshan Prefecture of Sichuan Province and the school has started recruitment since 2010.
